Security & Data Privacy

Net24 protects your sensitive data using the most advanced encryption standards available. In addition to industry standard SSL transport, your data is encrypted using AES, 3DES or Twofish encryption and stored at our secure Data Centre.

Secure 128-bit SSL communication

All communication between the OBS backup server and your computer is transported in a 128-bit SSL (Secure Socket Layer) channel. This means that although your backup files travel through a public network (the Internet), your data is safely transferred to the backup server without anyone having any knowledge of what is being exchanged.

Backup data is securely encrypted

The OBS backup process first compresses and then encrypts your files with your defined encryption key before they are sent to the backup server. Your files are stored in this encrypted state on the backup server and cannot be accessed by anyone without your unique encryption key, not even Net24 can access your data.

We don’t keep your encryption key

The encryption key used to encrypt your files resides only on your computer and is known only to you. It is never transmitted anywhere across the Internet or to the backup server. If this key is lost, your backup files cannot be decrypted and your files will never be recovered.

Advanced encryption algorithm used to encrypt data

The Online Backup Manager software offers a choice of advanced encryption algorithms to encrypt your data. For each backup set that you create you can alternatively choose between AES, 3DES or Twofish encryption algorithms.

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a block cipher adopted as an encryption standard by the U.S. government. AES was announced by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as U.S. FIPS PUB 197 (FIPS 197) in November 26, 2001 after a 5-year standardization process. Today, AES is one of the most popular algorithms used in symmetric key cryptography.

Twofish is a symmetric key block cipher with a block size of 128 bits and key sizes up to 256 bits. It was one of the five finalists of the Advanced Encryption Standard contest, but was not selected for standardisation. Twofish is related to the earlier block cipher Blowfish.

Restricted access to data by IP addresses

Access to your backup files can be restricted to a set of IP addresses that you define. If someone tries to access your data from an IP address not on your defined list, their access will be denied. This additional security step ensures that your backup files are not open to all locations, even if your username and password were to be known.

Secure Data Centre

The backup servers that store your data are housed in Net24's secure Data Centre facility. The facility is secured with proxy card access and monitored with CCV (closed circuit video) surveillance cameras which record all entry/exit points and open areas. These are in operation 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The building itself is nondescript and has no ground floor access.
